Today’s post unfortunately has to start with some sad news. You all are probably familiar with our sweet chicken sculpture that our dear friend Urmas made for us during the “building Upon” kiln building event.

Yesterday, while we were having a great time at Bulldog Pottery’s Cousins in Clay event with our potter friends, some dark and mysterious events were happening at the homestead.
Upon arriving at home in the late afternoon, this is what awaited us
That’s right, there was nothing in the place where the chicken had been. We have been deeply saddened by this turn of the events. The chicken was taken in a broad daylight, on a Sunday, from next to a church and on a main road!!! I just can’t wrap my head around it.
The Cousins in Clay was fun, however, as it always is! Cheers to Bruce, Samantha, Gloria and Ed, for their hard work! You guys rock!
On a positive note – when you don’t see me blogging – life still goes on behind the blogging curtains… Some evidence is here:
Bisque load comes out today. There are some really cool beer steins/mugs that I threw and trimmed, and Adam drew on! Can’t wait to see those, post wood-firing!
We have prepped, stacked and re-stacked plenty of wood in anticipation of next firing, which is scheduled to be this coming weekend. I have plenty of prep work to do this week: tear down the front bagwall; clean out the kiln floor from last firings mishaps (some re-fired pots that I placed between the firebox and front bagwall got their bottoms stuck to the kiln floor due to heavy ash and salt in that particular kiln area); general kiln and kiln-shelf cleaning; mix up small amounts of new glazes to test them on actual pieces; mix up few new test glazes; mix up kiln-wash for salt cups; glaze the pots; buy new pyrometer sleeves; make cone packs; make wadding.
That all has to happen before Thursday (while I also work at STARworks Garden, and keep the family in our house-boat from sinking), which is the loading day. I’m leaving Friday for a buffer, in case I run into any snags. Saturday at the butt-crack of dawn, or even Friday night, I’d like to light a small fire in the primary air holes of the firebox, and fire the kiln off by Saturday night.
Well, it’s not just “I” who will be firing. Adam should be able to play with the fire too this time and David and Rose will be helping to fill the kiln with their work, and with the later shifts. Hopefully we’ll do a better job at documenting this time.
Well. Enough of talking. The list will not get checked off if I stay here much longer.
